Turning a frown upside down can be easy, but smiling about eye wrinkles, droopiness, or sagginess is harder to do. If you’re looking to rewind time and reduce signs of eyelid droop or sag, then you might want to consider eyelid surgery.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing excess skin and fat around the eyelid area. In doing so, this can refresh your appearance drastically whilst addressing concerns such as drooping or sagging eyelids, fine wrinkles and other signs of ageing.

Even if you’re simply looking to change your eyelids’ aesthetic quality, here’s all you need to know about eyelid surgery and whether it’s right for you.

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a corrective cosmetic procedure that can correct a range of concerns related to the eyelid and brow area. The skin on our eyelids is one of the most thin and delicate regions of our face so it’s no surprise that as we age, the skin around our eyes begin to droop and sag.

This can affect you in more ways than just looking older—you could look even more tired, sad, or angrier than you really are. Functionally, loose eyelid skin could also affect your peripheral vision (side vision). If your eyelids feel heavy and obstruct your vision, eyelid surgery may be for you.

Eyelid surgery can be conducted in two ways, with techniques and results varying slightly to accommodate your needs and eyelid anatomy. These could include:

Upper eyelid surgery

This involves creating an incision in the upper eyelid where your skin naturally creases. This is followed by removal or adjustment of excess tissue that is weighing your eyelids down.

Lower eyelid surgery

This is similar to upper eyelid surgery, except an incision is made in the lower eyelid or under your lower lash line. Excess tissue that could be contributing to dark circles, wrinkles, or puffy eyes is then removed or repositioned.

It’s even possible to get both surgeries simultaneously to revitalise your appearance to look more youthful, refreshed, and well-rested.

When should I get eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery may be a good option to consider if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • sagging or droopy eyelids
  • heavy eyelids affecting vision
  • bulging under eyes

You might also consider eyelid surgery for aesthetic purposes or to alter your appearance. In this case, it’s good to carefully consider your expectations and to discuss this with your doctor or with the cosmetic experts at SkinCentre to know if this surgery would be a good fit for you.

Post-surgery recovery and care

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and takes one to two hours. After the surgery, you can leave to recover at home. It’s expected that you’ll need one to two weeks to recover although this varies from person to person. After the procedure, you may experience:

  • swelling and bruising
  • light sensitivity
  • blurred or double vision
  • pain or discomfort
  • difficulty closing your eyes

Rest assured this is normal and your cosmetic surgeon will provide detailed instructions regarding the aftercare of your eyelid surgery. Additionally, you may be given or recommended antibiotic creams, pain medication, and eye drops to help ease any discomfort. Healing is a gradual process and your doctor may suggest the following to help your eyelids heal optimally:

  • keeping your head elevated to reduce swelling
  • applying cold compresses in the first 48 to 72 hours
  • avoiding strenuous activities such as lifting, driving, and high intensity exercises for a week
  • trying not to irritate or strain your eyes
  • cleaning your eyes regularly with the recommended eye drops and ointments
  • avoiding using contact lenses for approximately two weeks
  • wearing sunglasses when outside to protect your eyes from irritants

Questions?

Many people benefit from eyelid surgery and feel that they appear more youthful and refreshed. For some, it’s also provided them with renewed self confidence. Although extra care is needed, the results will speak for themselves in a matter of weeks.
