What is Mohs Surgery and When do you need it?
Mohs Surgery is the gold standard for treating non-melanoma skin cancer in high-risk areas.
When it comes to treating non-melanoma skin cancer, precision and expertise are crucial — especially when the tumour is located on the face, ears, nose, scalp, or other sensitive areas.
At SkinCentre Tauranga, our specialist dermatologic surgeons perform Mohs micrographic surgery, a highly precise technique that offers the highest cure rates while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. It’s the gold standard for removing basal and squamous cell carcinomas in areas where cosmetic and functional outcomes matter most.

What Is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs surgery is an advanced, tissue-sparing technique used to remove non-melanoma skin cancers layer by layer, with immediate microscopic examination of each layer to check for remaining cancer cells.
By progressively removing and examining tissue during the procedure, Mohs allows the surgeon to precisely trace and remove all cancerous tissue while leaving as much normal skin intact as possible.
It is especially effective for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) located on:
- The face, nose, ears, lips, and scalp
- The hands, feet, and genitals
- Areas where recurrence risk is higher
- Sites where tissue preservation is critical
Why Is Mohs the Gold Standard for High-Risk Sites?
For skin cancers in functionally or cosmetically sensitive areas, Mohs surgery offers:
- The highest cure rates (up to 99% for certain BCCs)
- Immediate microscopic confirmation of complete tumour removal
- Minimal removal of healthy tissue, resulting in smaller wounds and better cosmetic outcomes
- Lower risk of recurrence compared to standard excision

Dr Paul Salmon was New Zealand’s first dermatologist to complete a fellowship with the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS)
SkinCentre operates New Zealand’s only ACMS-accredited Mohs fellowship training programme, setting the national standard for education and expertise in this field
Our procedures are performed in a fully equipped, accredited day surgery facility in Tauranga
We combine Mohs with expert wound reconstruction techniques to optimise both safety and appearance
What’s the Recovery Like?
Mohs surgery is performed under local anaesthetic as a day procedure. You’ll be awake but comfortable, and most people go home the same day.
Once the cancer has been completely removed, we’ll discuss the best way to repair the site. This may involve:
- Simple stitches
- Skin flaps or grafts
- Referral to another surgical specialist, if needed
We provide comprehensive aftercare and follow-up to support healing and ensure excellent outcomes.
Do I Need a Referral?
If you’ve been diagnosed with a non-melanoma skin cancer in a high-risk area, your GP may refer you directly to SkinCentre for Mohs surgery. We also welcome referrals from plastic surgeons and other specialists, and accept direct bookings for patient assessment and second opinions.
