∴ Photo-Aging
How does CO₂ laser work?
CO₂ laser produce’s light at a 10,600nm wavelength, which is absorbed by water in the tissue. This energy heats the water to its boiling point, causing the targeted tissue to evaporate.
Some heat is absorbed by surrounding tissue, leading to coagulation, which stops bleeding (haemostasis) and stimulates deeper layers of skin, promoting fibroblast activity and new collagen formation (neocollagenesis).
Due to the intensity and precision of the laser, it can only be safely operated by a qualified Cosmetic Surgeon or Dermatologist. The laser can be delivered through a scanner, which controls how the energy is applied—either across the entire treatment area or in fractions (fractional ablation). The combined effects of ablation and coagulation remove damaged skin and trigger the body to regenerate fresh, youthful skin.
What is the process?
Specialist Consultation
A consultation with a Specialist is the essential first step in your laser journey. During this first meeting, you’ll have the chance to discuss your goals for your skin and concerns you may have to determine if the CO2 laser is the right treatment for you. The Specialist will walk you through all pre and post treatment instructions and offer a personalised quote based on your specific requirements.
Pre-Procedure
- Fill your prescriptions and complete your blood tests as soon as possible. (You will be given these forms at your pre-op consult or they may be emailed out to you.)
- Limit sun exposure and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50+ to your entire face for two weeks prior to the procedure.
- Refrain from smoking for two weeks before and two weeks after your surgery.
- If you live outside the Tauranga area, please arrange for accommodation as you must stay locally for the night of your procedure.
- Make sure to have someone drive you to and from the clinic on the day of your procedure. You will receive sedation and cannot drive for 24 hours afterward.
- If you experience cold or facial sores, fever, or any other illness prior to your treatment, please let us know.
Procedure Day!
On the day of your procedure, we ask that you arrive a two hours early. This will allow us enough time to go over all the necessary information and get you ready for the treatment.
The procedure will be performed using local anesthetic and light oral sedation, ensuring a low-risk experience with minimal discomfort.
Once everything is set, we will take you to the treatment room to begin. The duration time in theatre can range from 80 to 120 minutes, depending on the specific treatment being performed.
Throughout the process, our specialist and nursing team will be with you, checking in regularly to ensure your comfort.
After the procedure is completed, we will call your driver to collect you. We will send you home with a goodie bag that includes essential items, along with clear instructions for your recovery.
Recovery
We will provide you with a full in depth recovery regimen on the day of your procedure.
Your skin will appear raw and red during the first week, followed by moderate redness for the next two to three weeks. Redness can last out to three months, slowly fading over that time. If you choose to we can shorten this course with our vascular laser.
In the initial 2-3 days following treatment, you may experience weeping of clear fluids, mild to moderate swelling, and a mild burning sensation. These symptoms should improve daily.
Some patients may notice itching around days 4 or 5. While some itching is normal, excessive itching is not. It is also common for your skin to have areas that are lighter and darker throughout the healing process.
Once your skin has fully healed, our nurses will provide guidance on the best moisturisers and cosmetics to use. Please refrain from applying any products until you have received instructions from your Doctor or one of our nursing staff.
Follow-Up Appointments
Your follow-up appointments will be scheduled for you on the day of your procedure. You will need to attend a follow-up visit 24 hours, 7 days, and 4 weeks after your procedure.
These appointments are crucial for monitoring your healing progress and ensuring that everything is going smoothly.
If you have any concerns or questions about your recovery, our nursing team is always available to assist you.
