Why Catching Sun Damage Early Matters
In New Zealand, our intense UV exposure puts us at a high risk for cumulative sun damage. Much of this damage builds slowly, layer by layer, long before we see anything on the surface. Recognising early signs is vital because it can help prevent these changes from evolving into more serious skin conditions, including squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.
What Does Early Sun Damage Look Like?
Early sun damage can be subtle. Look out for:
– Rough, sandpaper-like patches on sun-exposed skin (especially scalp, face, forearms)
– Red, dry, or scaly areas that don’t go away
– Discoloured or blotchy skin
– Small crusty lesions that come and go
– A feeling of tightness, dryness or itchiness in certain areas
What Is Actinic Keratosis (AK)?
Actinic keratoses are common pre-cancerous lesions caused by UV damage. They appear as rough, scaly spots – often mistaken for dry skin or eczema. Left untreated, a percentage of these can evolve into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The earlier they are treated, the easier and safer it is.
Who Is Most at Risk?
You are more likely to develop sun damage and actinic keratoses if you:
– Are over 40
– Have fair skin that burns easily
– Work or spend significant time outdoors
– Have a personal or family history of skin cancer
– Had a lot of sun exposure as a child or teen
Treatments Available at SkinCentre
At SkinCentre Tauranga, our Dermatologists are highly experienced in diagnosing and treating sun damage early. Treatments we offer include:
– Cryotherapy (freezing)
– Topical creams (e.g. 5-FU, imiquimod)
– Curettage and electrosurgery
– Laser resurfacing for cosmetic and therapeutic improvement
Why You Shouldn’t Ignore ‘Dry Spots’
What might seem like just dry or flaky skin could actually be actinic keratosis. These lesions come and go, but that doesn’t mean they’re harmless. If they persist, bleed, become sore or change in size or texture, they need expert review.
